Glossary - Literacy Rate Adults

The average literacy rate for adults (15+) is 79.8% with a standard deviation of 20.4%. The highest number is 99.8% (several countries) while the lowest one is 19.0% (Mali).

This figure shows the ratio of literated adults out of the total adult population. A literate person is a person who can read and write with understanding short and simple statement on their daily life. Unfortunately, this figure is not published by many countries.
