Poland is one of the largest countries in Europe and since 2004 member of the European Union. It has a population of about 38.5 million inhabitants. Although the living standard is below world average, due to the huge population, Poland is quite a big economic power. Weaknesses in the economic system are the quite low economic activity rate and the very high unemployment rate.

The life expectancy is not that long compared with other European countries, however quite good compared with the world average. A positive aspect is the low HIV rate, while the GHG emissions are quite high. The school life expectancy is above average, while the tertiary education enrolment ratio is still behind the leading countries in that area.
