Italy is one of the largest countries in Europe and one of the six founding members of the European Union. Italy has a population of about 58 million inhabitants and an area of 301,000 km˛. The country is the 8th largest economy in the world. The GDP per capita at PPP is high, with almost reaching $29,000. The negative side of the Italian economy is the low economic activity rate and a quite high unemployment rate.

Italians have a life expectancy of almost 80 years, which is very high. Also the HIV rate is not that high, in contrast to the greenhouse gas emissions. The school life expectancy is very long and the literacy rate for adults and youth is very high. The tertiary education enrolment rate, however, is still far behind the leading countries in that area.
