India is the second largest country (after
China) in terms of population with about 1.1
billion inhabitants, while ranking at number seven in terms of size.
India as a whole has the fourth biggest economy in terms of purchasing
power. This is largely because of the big population, as the average
Indian has a very low income. What has to be considered is that, similar
to China, there are
big differences between rich and poor. An economic activity rate of
under 60% is not that good, while an unemployment rate of just over 4%
is quite good.
Indians have a life expectancy of 63.2 years, which is not very long.
While the drinking water coverage is quite o.k., the country has a lack
of modern sanitation facilities. The HIV-rate for India is quite low. In
spite of some well-educated inhabitants (as can for example be seen in
the IT industry), the general education system in India is very poor.
The school life expectancy for the average child is just 10 years and
only a bit more than 10% of the youth gets tertiary education. Also the
literacy rate is very low, with still about a quarter of the youth which
is unliterated.
