Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country with about 7.7 million
inhabitants and an area of 111,000 km˛. The country joined the
EU in 2007. Bulgaria is the 65th
largest economy in the world, but the average GDP per capita (measuring
the living standard) is still quite low. Other economic statistics such
as economic activity and unemployment rate are not good either.
Bulgarians have a life expectancy of 72.2 years, which is not that
short. The country has an excellent drinking water and sanitation
coverage, while the emitted greenhouse gases per capita are quite high.
A school life expectancy with 13 years is above world average. This
leads to a very good literacy rate, for both, adults and youth. On the
other hand, the tertiary sector is not that advanced with just a bit
over 40% of the relevant age range attending tertiary education
programs.
