Austria is a country in central Europe and a member of the European Union. With about 8.2 million inhabitants and a total area of about 84,000 km˛, Austria is a relative small country. Despite that and due to a high GDP per capita, the size of the Austrian economy is quite big. Although the economic activity rate is not high, the unemployment rate is quite low.

Austrians have a long life expectancy, partly due to excellent drinking water and sanitations conditions and due to a low AIDS rate. Austria, like most of the developed countries, has high GHG emissions. The average Austrian spends 15 years in schools, however, the tertiary education enrolment ratio is quite low.
